DME now has the capability to perform in house Positive Material Identification or PMI. PMI is the analysis of a metallic alloy to establish composition by reading the quantities by percentage of its constituent elements. To put it simply, it is a process that enables DME to see the composition of a metal, in order to meet customer specific criteria in certain applications. For example, in applications where there are high temperatures and/or high pressure ratings, especially with hazardous materials, it is very important to confirm exact materials being used in order to prevent an injury or catastrophic event. Each metal used in the manufacturing of expansion joints is labeled for a specific strength and durability, and PMI can be performed to confirm this on both incoming material and end-product verification. DME can also gather a PMI on thin weld beads independent from substrate materials.
DME performs PMI with the use of handheld devices commonly called a “PMI gun.” The devices are highly sophisticated and can read several different types of metal compositions. The most common metals identified are Stainless Steels, Wrought Aluminum Alloys, Copper Alloys and Nickel Alloys. DME utilizes the PMI of their products to insure material compliance in applications such as Petrochemical, Power Generation and some Aerospace applications.
